When my dad was trying to pick up on Spanish I soaked up the vocabulary and it become fun to learn at the age of 4. I later took 6 years of Spanish classes throughout high school and college. I am not fluent or even close to it, but now that I am a new mom I want August to learn Spanish.
I have done a ton of reading and studies show the earlier you introduce a language, the more your child will retain it. August is 4 months old and I understand that he will not be fluent without being fully immersed. There are a few things we are doing to get him exposed.
- Canticos – August loves music and these little birdies sing songs in English and Spanish. They always have the words on the screen as well.
- Sesamo– This is Sesame Street in Spanish
- Bilingual baby books- August gets a new bilingual book from his pediatrician at each milestone check up. We also will be getting additional bilingual books.
- Music- We constantly are listening to music in Spanish.
- Movies- You guessed it, we are playing the Spanish version
Here are some additional things we plan to try as he gets a little older.
- Bilingual play groups
- Bilingual story time at the library
- Take advantage of any Bilingual activities in day care or preschool
- These TV shows are for bilingual toddlers and kids
I have downloaded the Duolingo App and so much of what I learned years ago is slowly coming back. You can use this app even if you have never been exposed to a language before. This app would also work great for older kids.
I never want learning to feel like a chore for August. I plan to keep it as fun as possible. Does anyone have any additional ideas for teaching their children another language?
