Homemade Christmas Ornaments

One of my first memories is making Salt Dough Christmas Ornaments with my younger brother and mom. My mom put food coloring in our dough. We ended up with blue stars and candy canes. Now that I am a mom I wanted to repeat this memory and turn it into a tradition. You can see the recipe down below!

Salt Dough Ornaments

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups of Flour
  • 1 Cup of Salt
  • 1 Cup of Water
  • Paint of your Choice
  • Ribbon of your Choice
  • Cookie Cutters
  • Plastic Straw or Tooth Pick

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees
  2. Dump your flour and salt into a mixing bowl
  3. Very slowly add cold water mixing as you go
  4. You will start to knead the mixture with your hands as it thickens up
  5. Sprinkle a little flour on your counter top and knead the mixture on top. The goal is to have a consistency like play-dough
  6. With a rolling pin roll out your dough
  7. Using your cookie cutter you will make your ornaments
  8. You can use a straw or tooth pick to place holes in your ornaments. This is where the ribbon will go.
  9. Place your ornaments into the oven
  10. You will need to cook them on low heat until they are hard

Notes

Once they have cooled you can paint and decorate them. I recommend spraying with a gloss once you have finished. This will keep them around for many years!
